Aaron Strand on Movies That Matter

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
It’s Wednesday. And sobriety isn’t just about the moment you quit — it’s about what happens after. This is the ethos behind The Sober Curator podcast, and it’s brought to life in Episode 21 by filmmaker and creator Aaron Strand. Host Alysse Bryson dives deep with Aaron, exploring the creative alchemy that transformed his struggles with addiction into an acclaimed feature film, “Withdrawal.” Their conversation peels back the curtain on creativity, ego and growth, showing the power of staying open when recovery gets real — and messy.

From Rock Bottom to the Director’s Chair: Aaron Strand on Making Movies That Matter

Aaron’s story is both raw and inspiring. After hitting a low — homeless in New York City and returning to his small hometown of Athens, Georgia — he found himself pouring anger, resentment and disappointment into notebooks just to survive another day sober. These weren’t polished prose or poetic reflections. They were messy, honest and unfiltered. But a serendipitous Facebook conversation with a college friend changed everything; after reading Aaron’s vivid account of addiction’s internal chaos, she encouraged him: “This would be a great monologue.”

Sober in the City: Celebrating 7 Years in NYC

I hit seven years of sobriety on February 10, 2025. When I got sober, one of the first things I put on my bucket list was to get to NYC and witness the fashion world in real life. I wanted to feel the pulse of the city, to be where Halston, Studio 54 and all the great misfit creatives once came alive. I didn’t know how or when, but I knew I wanted to be in the room where style and self-expression weren’t just accepted — they were worshipped.

Spirituality, Social Justice, Love & Connection: Ted Neill’s Latest Book, “My Name is Ted and I’m a Racist”

What does it mean to get sober — not just from alcohol, but from denial, from ego, from deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behavior?

That’s the question author and activist Ted Neill wrestles with in one of the most powerful episodes of “Eternally Amy” to date. In this interview with host Amy Liz Harrison, a sober mom of eight and longtime 12-step devotee, Ted gets radically honest about his recovery, his mental health struggles and his decision to write the 600+ page personal reckoning titled: “My Name Is Ted and I’m a Racist: How a Bunch of Sober Alcoholics Gave Me Tools to Confront My Racial Biases.”
