On this Star Wars Day, we honor the Jedi of recovery—those who have chosen to resist the Dark Side of substance misuse and instead walk the path of truth, light, and service. Whether you're a Soberwan just beginning your training or a Sober Jedi Master guiding others through the cosmos of recovery, know this: the Force is strong with your sobriety.

Recovery is not unlike the hero’s journey—full of trials, transformation, and triumph. The Sober Force isn't just a clever pun (though we love those); it's a movement of mindful warriors using their lived experiences to help others rise. So today, wield your mocktail like a lightsaber, raise your glass to your growth, and celebrate the steps that brought you here—one fearless moral inventory at a time. As Master Yoda might say, “Recover out loud, you must. Hope, you will spread. May the Sober Force be with you—always.”

The Hero’s Journey of a Recovering Addict

As someone in recovery, have you ever thought of yourself as a hero? Yeah, me neither. I tend to be hard on myself sometimes and do not zoom out to see the whole picture of who I have become or what I have accomplished. By studying the Hero’s journey, a timeless storytelling framework, I have learned that we in recovery are indeed heroes. I will be laying out this journey over a three-article series, and I want to invite you along on this adventure. If you are sober today, you are a hero.

We arrive at the moment we decide to step into the unknown. It’s the first meeting at a recovery group, the call to a treatment center, or reaching out to other recovery resources. It’s terrifying. We’re leaving behind the world we’ve known — even if that world was hurting us. Despite the fear, we could no longer rationalize staying where we were.
