⏪ Friday Flashback: 💜 Recovery, Rhinestones & Pumpkin Spice — Oh My! ⏪

National Recovery Month continues with baseball, bedazzling, book reviews and a reminder that “girl gets dry” beats “girl gets guy.”

FROM THE DESK OF THE FOUNDER (*that is covered in tchotchkes)

Hi Sober Friends,

September means two things: National Recovery Month continues 💜 and pumpkin spice is back! 🎃☕ This week’s Flashback is packed with sparkle, spirit and a little zombie apocalypse survival.

We’re gearing up for Recovery Day at the Mariners — a rally, march and ballgame that proves community is the ultimate team sport. We’re also bedazzling our Big Books (because rhinestones are a spiritual tool), flipping through “The Mocktail Club” recipe deck, and diving into “The Thirteenth Step: Zombie Recovery” — a horror story with a sober twist.

And for movie night? We revisited “Smashed” (2012) — a drama that reminded us sobriety isn’t about “girl gets the guy,” it’s about “girl gets dry.” And honestly, that’s the best plotline ever. 🙌

So pour your pumpkin spice latte (NA, of course), settle in and let’s celebrate recovery — past, present and future.

Keep it real, keep it fun and keep it sober,

MOVIE NIGHT

We Watched The 2012 American Drama “Smashed” And It Gave Us All The Feels

At some point in my recovery, I stopped obsessing about “girl gets the guy” aspirations and changed to “girl gets dry” goals. It was the best decision I ever made. Changing my focus from the external and coming to grips with what needed to change on the inside is really when the rubber hit the road in my recovery.

ADDICTION FICTION

Addiction Fiction Review by Will Thatcher – “The Thirteenth Step: Zombie Recovery”

This is the first book by Michele Miller that I have read, and it was excellent. It starts as a hard-core zombie story set in NYC, with a great cast of characters. There are all of the requisite guts, gore and brains splattering …. It is not my usual genre, but it is brilliantly done. The recovery aspect of the story is barely mentioned in the first few chapters. It comes on slowly and naturally. Eventually, the cast figures out that alcoholics and addicts are “immune” from the zombie disease (the Walking Dead can’t smell them), so they are ultimately the only ones who survive the apocalypse. I love this concept because I have often thought that my alcoholism is what saved me. Sure, it was awful at the bottom, but without it, I would not have the life I love today.

HAPPY EVERY HOUR

“The Mocktail Club” by Derick Santiago — Cocktail Book Review

Suppose you’ve started to search for the perfect non-alcoholic cocktail recipe book. In that case, you’ve discovered many to choose from, with a range of complexities associated with the recipes within. I appreciate having a few to pull from, depending on my mood. If I want a basic cocktail, which I can likely create with the ingredients in my fridge, I go to Free Spirit Cocktails. If I’m feeling like a scientist and want to create my own NA spirit, I reach for ZERO. And when I want to create a classic cocktail, I flip open The Mocktail Club or the accompanying Make It a Mocktail Recipe Deck. As a bonus, the book and the deck contain beautifully photographed cocktails served in lovely glassware.

CURATED CRAFTS

Bedazzling My Big Book: Because Recovery Deserves Rhinestones

Let’s be real — my recovery is already extra, so it only made sense that my Big Book got a little extra too. I mean, if I’m going to keep this book by my bedside, in my bag or on display for late-night spiritual crises (or early-morning step work panic), she might as well shimmer. Enter: the Bedazzled Big Book project — equal parts glitter therapy and higher power glam.

Want to give your big book, or any book really, a glow-up too? Friend, let me walk you through the rhinestone revolution.
