The Best and Worst Sober and Sober Curious Celebs at the 2024 VMAs

When it comes to the VMAs, we know one thing for sure: subtlety is not on the guest list. Last night’s red carpet was an absolute carnival of bold statements, questionable choices, and—of course—more sequins than a sober disco revival.

For the sober and sober-curious crowd, the looks ranged from classy and clean to “someone definitely thought this was a good idea at the time.” So, let’s dive into the most buzz-worthy moments of the night—whether they were a hit or a glorious miss.

HAPPY EVERY HOUR
Happy Every Hour Review – Fre White Zinfandel

I’m excited to share another non-red and non-sparkling NA wine category find. Everyone has different tastes, so I always encourage you to experiment and decide for yourselves. The white zinfandel from Fre is on my go-to list when craving something refreshing and fruit-forward. This alcohol-removed wine is bottled in Napa Valley and contains grapes from California vineyards.

Bo Burnham’s “Inside” Review

Let’s cut to the chase: Bo Burnham’s Inside is a masterpiece. This profoundly introspective and layered work captures the raw essence of isolation, anxiety, and self-reflection during the pandemic. It is a time capsule that perfectly embodies a period in everyone’s life that only art can. It was a time full of uncertainty and fear and when the world truly felt like it had turned upside down—a time when we finally had open, honest conversations about our mental health.

MENTAL HEALTH
I Am an Alcoholic, and I Love Colonoscopies

I am an alcoholic in long-term recovery. To me, this means I live with substance use disorder, one day at a time. I have learned to modify my behavior. This enables me to live a healthy, productive, and sober life without having to drink or use any substances. It took me about twenty-five years to figure that out.

Aberdeen – A Bold, Yet Uneven Debut Exploring Homelessness and Identity

There is a refreshing bluntness to this debut film from First Nations writer-directors Ryan Cooper and Eva Thomas. After a brief prologue depicting the seemingly simpler time of her childhood, we are thrown directly into the chaos of Aberdeen Spence’s adult life, setting the propulsive tone for the rest of the film, with powerhouse Indigenous actor Gail Maurice in the title role, this brave, if uneven indie pulls no punches.

Cyndi Lauper, Sober since 1992

Cyndi Lauper GIF by 2024 MTV Video Music Awards

Cyndi Lauper has been candid about her past struggles with substance use, particularly during difficult times in her career and personal life. In the 1980s the starlet began to realize that her substance use was spiraling out of control and sought recovery around 1992. In recent years, she has focused on her health and well-being, prioritizing sobriety and mental wellness. As a person living with psoriasis, she learned early on that “alcohol is a trigger for me.” Through her commitment to self-care, including yoga and diet changes, Lauper has maintained a healthier, sober lifestyle, using her platform to advocate for mental health and wellness while continuing to inspire fans with her music and activism.

Sometimes You Need Purpose

I’m going to do something I have never done before. I am just sitting here with my earbuds, listening to music and letting the words flow. I am going to write this all-in-one shot. I am not going to edit this other than a read-through and make sure that I did not misspell any words. I do not want this edited. I want this to be me. Pure. Raw. Me.
