🎙️ Recovery Podcastland🎧01/14: Pulling Back the Curtain - Filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty on Shame, Systems, and the Business of Recovery🎙️✨

Truth hits different when it finally sets you free.

Today’s Podcast Pour: Zero-Proof Listening

There’s a moment in today’s episode where filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty talks about parents leaving his documentary screenings in tears—not because they were retraumatized, but because they finally understood something life-changing: what happened to their family wasn’t their fault. And whew… that’s the kind of truth that loosens shame’s grip. Benjamin isn’t just telling a story—he’s exposing a system, holding up a mirror to the recovery industry, and giving families language for what they’ve lived through. Plus, if you need a little hope-fueled momentum to go with your podcast drop, we’re also spotlighting Amplify Sober Voices, the brand-new movement and conference debuting at Podfest 2026—kicking off tomorrow in Orlando with 50+ sober creators coming together to shape the future of alcohol-free storytelling. Keep your eye on socials… the sober creators are linking arms, and it’s giving main character energy (minus the hangover).

Now let’s get to it…

SOBER CURATOR PODCAST

Pulling Back the Curtain: Filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty on Shame, Systems, and the Business of Recovery

There’s a moment in this conversation when filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty describes parents walking out of his documentary screenings with tears in their eyes — not because the film retraumatized them, but because, for the first time, they realized what happened to their family wasn’t their fault

That moment says everything about why this episode matters.

Benjamin’s work sits at the intersection of storytelling and systemic exposure. He’s not just making a film; he’s building a mirror large enough for families, loved ones, policymakers, and the entire recovery ecosystem to look into. And people are seeing truth â€” painful, freeing, clarifying truth.

SOBRIETY IN THE CITY

When Sober Creators Unite: The Movement Amplifying Every Voice

What happens when people stop hiding their sobriety — and start celebrating it out loud? For Margy Schaller, that shift felt like a physical transformation. After 18 years of sobriety lived mostly in silence, she finally came out publicly — and found freedom through Sober Life Rocks, the community she co-founded with Laura Nelson.

Together, they’re now leading something bigger: Amplify Sober Voices, a conference debuting at Podfest 2026 designed to unite sober creators, coaches, writers, and leaders from every corner of the alcohol-free world.

This event kicks off TOMORROW in Orlando, Florida. Keep your eye on socials as a group of over 50 sober content creators unite to discuss the future of podcasting for the sober, sober-curious, and recovery communities.

SOBER SLOGAN OF THE WEEK

Brought to you by The Sober City App

What about the complex yet profound sober slogan: "Live and let live"? To me, it’s basically the program’s polite way of telling my nosy and judgmental inner busy body, control freak, to finally sit down and shut up.  Because nothing screams enlightenment (or entitlement) like finally shutting up about how everyone else should run their damn lives.  Back in my drinking days, I was the self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner of the universe—dispensing unsolicited "wisdom" like a drunk Oprah on a rampage.

Now I practice this gem by biting my tongue so hard it hurts whenever someone’s making choices I’d never make, while whispering to myself, "Not your circus, not your monkeys, bruh." It’s the gloriously passive-aggressive permission slip to mind my own business for once. And honestly, we all pretty much expect the same tongue-biting ‘stay off my lawn’ approach from others when we say or do something annoying. Try this short prayer: â€œGod, grant me the serenity to mind my own damn business, the courage to let others drive their own trains (even if they’re heading for a wreck), and the wisdom to know that fixing me is already a full-time gig. Amen.
