Well hey, Sober Squad

St. Patrick's Day is coming, and we're reclaiming it. NYC's biggest alcohol-free Irish celebration is back, Maxine Linehan is performing the songs of U2 for an exclusive event, and Anne Marie Cribbin is here to remind us that Irish culture is so much deeper than green beer. We've also got punk rock dad Nelson Brolly talking sobriety and parenthood on the Sober Dad Crew, plus a science-backed deep dive into cellular health for women over 40 who want to boost longevity naturally. On the celebrity front, our Sober Celeb of the Week is Charlie Sheen (yes, really), and we've updated our list of 100+ famous people in recovery. Oh, and that "California Sober" thing where you swap booze for weed? We're asking the hard question: is it actually safer, or are we just telling ourselves a story? Also, Dopeywood Comedy at The Comedy Store on April 12. Mark it down.

Now let’s get to it…

ADDICTION FICTION

"The River Is Waiting" by Wally Lamb

"The River Is Waiting" is a painful, honest novel about guilt, grief, and the long road toward forgiveness. Wally Lamb tells a story that is hard to read at times, but important. It looks directly at the consequences of addiction, not just for the person struggling, but for everyone around them.

This is not a redemption story that comes easily. It is slow, uncomfortable, and deeply human. We need more stories like this that get at the heart of how destructive addiction can be.

SOBRIETY IN THE CITY

Sober St. Patrick's Day 2026: NYC's Biggest Alcohol-Free Irish Celebration

Let's talk about the elephant in the room. St. Patrick's Day has become synonymous with one thing in America, and it's not honoring the patron saint of Ireland. It's binge drinking. Green beer. Sloppy bar crawls. Waking up on March 18th with zero memory of the "celebration" you supposedly attended.

But here's the thing: St. Patrick's Day was never supposed to be about that. And for 15 years, Sober St. Patrick's Day® has been on a mission to prove it.

BACKSTAGE with The Sober Curator

Sobriety gave you the foundation. Backstage gives you the room.

Introducing Backstage with The Sober Curator. This is not a peer support group. It is a culture club, a members-only space for people in long-term recovery who want to talk about books, art, business, travel, creativity, and pop culture without every conversation circling back to sobriety as the main event.

WELLNESS AS A WAY OF LIFE

Cellular Health in Midlife Sobriety: How Women Over 40 Can Boost Longevity Naturally

There's a sobriety moment, months or years in depending, when fog lifts: clear thinking, sharp memory, steady emotions… and I remember thinking: "This is what my brain is supposed to feel like." And immediately after that thought came another: "What else have I been missing? What else could feel this good?"

Sober Celeb of the Week: Charlie Sheen

Once the face of Hollywood excess, Charlie Sheen has since spoken publicly about choosing sobriety after years of very public addiction struggles. In recent interviews, he’s reflected on accountability, willingness, and rebuilding his life — even aligning himself with the non-alcoholic movement through Wild AF Brewing. This week, we’re revisiting Sheen’s documentary, memoir, and recovery journey to explore what it looks like when chaos turns into clarity.

THIRSTY FOR WONDER

Reclaiming St. Patrick’s Day | Anne Marie Cribbin

The story of colonization is written in many languages, but one of the most insidious is the language of alcohol. For centuries, the British Empire wielded alcohol as a weapon of control, suppression, and assimilation against the Irish people. Understanding this history is essential not only for recognizing the deep wounds inflicted on Ireland but also for reclaiming sobriety as an act of rebellion, resistance, and self-determination.

California Sober? Why Replacing Alcohol with Weed May Not Be Safer

Recently, I met a woman at a meeting, and we were talking about how much more information there is now regarding women’s health and drinking. And we were both grateful that the info is so widely available now. But then she said something I was not expecting: that she smokes weed almost daily. That surprised me. I hadn’t read much about how cannabis is affecting people’s health, so I did a bit of research. It seems as if my friend from the meeting is not alone. As cannabis becomes more widely legalized and socially accepted, many people in alcohol recovery believe that using marijuana is a safer alternative to drinking. It even has a nickname: California Sober. But is it actually safer?

Dopeywood Comedy 2026: Big Laughs, Real Recovery, and The Comedy Store on April 12

If you know Dopey, you already get it.

The podcast has built one of the most fiercely loyal audiences in recovery media by doing something most recovery content refuses to do: tell the truth and make it funny. Dark, messy, deeply human funny. And now that same energy is coming off headphones and hitting a live stage in Los Angeles.

Dopeywood Comedy 2026 goes down at The Comedy Store on April 12 at 7:00 PM, with every dollar benefiting The Dopey Foundation, the nonprofit behind the show.

See you Wednesday!
