Chasing Dopamine, Finding Connection: A Sober Take on “Your Friends & Neighbors”
“Hangovers are canceled; fun is mandatory.” It’s a cheeky promise, but in episode 29 of The Sober Curator Podcast, that line becomes a thesis about what we really chase when we chase more — more money, more status, more thrill. The panel — hosts Alysse Bryson and Tamar Routly, and contributors Sarah Alaimo, Carolyn Bunn Lane Kennedy, Dr. Sarah Michaud and Megan Swan — gathered to unpack Apple TV+’s “Your Friends & Neighbors,” a sleek neighborhood drama where the crimes sparkle as much as the kitchens, and where the pursuit of “enough” looks suspiciously like addiction with better shoes.

How To Discover the Secret Benefits of Self-Hypnosis: Lower Stress & Boost Confidence
Before diving into its benefits, let’s clarify what self-hypnosis is. Unlike the stereotypical image of hypnosis as a circus act where people are made to quack like ducks on stage, self-hypnosis is an entirely different experience. It is essentially a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, allowing you to be more receptive to new ideas and ready for positive change.
MASTERING MENTAL FITNESS
Ready. Set. Change.
In the last few months two friends have, independently of each other, contacted me about their relationship with alcohol. It’s not my place to tell someone else they do or don’t have a drinking problem, but I do feel it’s beneficial to ask them certain questions. I don’t have a definitive list, but questions like ‘Why are you drinking?’, ‘How do you feel when you’re drinking?’, ‘Are you able to stop drinking?’ and ‘Does your drinking affect other people?’ help people to paint a picture of their drinking habits, or at least get them to think about their drinking in a way they might not have before.

Sober Celeb of the Week: Fergie
Pop star Fergie (Stacy Ann Ferguson, born 1975) has been candid about her harrowing battle with addiction, especially to crystal meth in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She’s described reaching “chemically induced psychosis and dementia” before entering recovery and getting clean. Fergie credits her faith and inner strength for helping her escape addiction and rebuild her life and career. While she has clarified that she still occasionally drinks wine, her decades-long freedom from hard drugs stands as a powerful example of survival and transformation — a Gen X “queen” who turned her darkest chapter into a story of resilience.

SOBER POP CULTURE
Pop Princesses, Dopamine and the Recovery of Joy
When we think of ritual, we often imagine candles, incense or carefully worded prayers. But for so many of us, ritual is already built into the pulse of pop. A new album release becomes a kind of liturgy: gathering online at midnight, watching a video premiere together, dissecting lyrics like sacred texts. There is repetition, intention and shared meaning. In recovery, those same elements matter. Rhythms we can return to, communities that witness us, patterns that soothe the nervous system and make us feel less alone.
MOVIE NIGHT
Review: “Bob and the Monster” – A Troubled Soul, A Relentless Advocate
“Bob and the Monster” is an award-winning documentary that charts the wild, heartbreaking and ultimately redemptive journey of Bob Forrest, the former frontman of Thelonious Monster who became an unconventional drug counselor. Directed by Keirda Bahruth, the film blends archival concert footage, candid interviews and present-day sequences to explore a man who lived on the edge of addiction before emerging as one of the most outspoken figures in recovery.
For some viewers, Forrest’s name may draw different associations. To many, it’s “Bob who?” Others recall him as the lead singer of Thelonious Monster, and still others know him as the down-to-earth counselor featured on VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.”
